fake-quarium, rattlesnake roundup & chinese sausage

so the lobby at my work started off as a normal lobby. you walked in, there were some tables and chairs, there was a room within the lobby with glass walls that people used as a yoga studio (ok, maybe not so normal), and then there was our office doors. well, the building peeps decided to give our lobby a makeover.

imagine:

- blue raspberry colored twizzlers (like, that artificial shiny candy look) COVERING the walls. yes, like rippling down the walls.

- black and white chairs and couches straight out of the 60s

- 40 flat screen tvs side by side across one whole wall constantly showing ocean videos

i’ve decided to call the tvs the fake-quarium. apparently there was actually a plan to put a real aquarium in the middle of the lobby, but due to high cost, they opted for tvs showing sea life instead.

fake aquarium

sorry, i didn’t take a photo of the blue walls. they’re too hideous.

but i actually kinda love the fake-quarium. at first i was like, seriously?? now, i’ve totally embraced it. i may start eating my lunches out here just watching the fish, and occasional shark. do you see the shark?? dun dun dun dun….

a common known fact – i love themes. well, i managed to get theme days at work! today was rattlesnake roundup day and i just happened to have a brown snakeskin dress! not actual snakeskin, just the pattern.

we encouraged people to wear snakeskin or cowboy apparel. we bought dollar store snakes and put them all over the kitchen (even in drawers for some scares). and the best part, we had our annual safety training today (we have labs at work) and rhiannon convinced our consultant to put 2 slides into her presentation about rattlesnake safety :)

tom and i found chinese sausage at the grocery store yesterday and decided to give it a try. yum! they have a nice, sweet flavor. we just cooked them up on a pan and i ate them with some sweet potatoes.

we also bought brussel sprouts this week and i’m really bummed i didn’t see this recipe before we cooked the sausage. so simple, and it sounds so good!! next time.

to cut the prep time, cut each brussels sprouts in half instead of shredding – or you could use the food processor with the shredder disc.

ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds brussels sprouts
6 ounces chinese sausage (or substitute with 4 ounces pancetta), diced
1 teaspoon fish sauce (or soy sauce)

directions:

1. add the chinese sausage to your wok or large saute pan. turn heat to medium low and let the sausage cook gently for 5 minutes. watch the heat – don’t let the chinese sausage burn. move the chinese sausage up the sides of the wok to let the fat drip down. remove the chinese sausage to a plate, use a slotted spoon to keep the fat in the pan.

2. turn the heat to medium-high and add in the brussels sprouts. toss to coat the brussels sprouts with the fat. stir fry for 2 minutes. add in 1 tablespoon of water and toss. let the brussels sprouts cook for 2 minutes.

(or, if you have cut the brussels sprouts in half instead of shredding, add 3 tablespoons water, turn the heat to medium and cover. cook for 5 minutes and check for doneness)

3. add in the fish sauce. toss in the cooked chinese sausage. taste and add season with additional fish sauce if needed. remember, the chinese sausage is very salty, so when you’re tasting, get a bite with both ingredients.
